Game Day

Multicultural Game Day was a way for Martin Walker and Raminyah Ingram to bring the greater community together to have robust conversations, in a safe space, where views are not always unified.

History of Multicultural Game Day

It Started With A Conversation

On March 18th, 2023, Martin and Raminyah attended the annual gala of No Racism in Schools. During the event, Martin introduced Raminyah to Lisa, the then-chairperson of the Las Vegas, NV chapter of SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice). As their conversation unfolded, Lisa mentioned the need for more impactful initiatives. Seizing the moment, Raminyah suggested leveraging the universal appeal of games to facilitate challenging conversations between African Americans and white individuals. She noted that every culture has its unique twist on playing the same game, and much could be learned about a person through such interactions.

About a month later, inspired by Raminyah's idea, Lisa reached out to Martin to revisit the concept. They, along with Raminyah, engaged in a series of three-way phone calls to flush out what such an event might look like.

As the planning progressed, Lisa and Raminyah had several more discussions. Martin took charge of the logistics, organizing roundtable discussions and setting the stage for the event. SURJ sponsored the venue and refreshments, while Raminyah’s vision shaped the event’s atmosphere and activities.

May 2024 marks the one-year anniversary of the Multicultural Game Day, a testament to the power of community, conversation, and shared experiences through play. Martin and Raminyah have successfully hosted this event monthly for 12 consecutive months, fostering a regular space for meaningful engagement.

Initially, in 2023, the Multicultural Game Day events were held at the Unitarian Church off Lake Mead Blvd. The venue has since shifted to the West Las Vegas Library in North Las Vegas, NV, where it continues to bring diverse groups together to explore different cultures through games.

Game Day FEEDBACK

"I had a great time. I really learned a lot. You have to realize and respect that everyone is different. Plus you really have to think about the game you are playing." Melanie H.

"I think game days are very informative. In February, I learned something new for black history during Black History Month. The most enjoyable part are the round circles discussions ... I get to sit in a room with influential people I wouldn't normally get to be around." Sabrina B.
